The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a pioneering initiative introduced in alignment with the recommendations of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020, which envisions a comprehensive overhaul of India's education system, places strong emphasis on revamping teacher education to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching at all levels. Recognizing that teachers form the backbone of any successful education system, the policy advocates for an integrated, multidisciplinary, and professional approach to teacher training.
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a four-year integrated programme designed for undergraduate students who wish to pursue a career in teaching. This programme integrates general education (arts, sciences, social sciences, or commerce) with professional teacher education, ensuring that prospective teachers develop both subject expertise and pedagogical skills simultaneously. As per NEP 2020, by 2030, the minimum degree qualification for teaching will be a four-year integrated B.Ed. degree offered at multidisciplinary higher education institutions (HEIs).
One of the core objectives of ITEP is to address the challenges associated with fragmented teacher education systems that previously lacked uniform standards and coherence. Through its integrated structure, ITEP aims to create a cadre of well-prepared, reflective, and ethical teachers capable of meeting the diverse educational needs of 21st-century learners. The curriculum of ITEP emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy, inclusive education, multilingualism, digital literacy, experiential learning, and Indian knowledge systems, aligning closely with the pedagogical shifts proposed in NEP 2020.
